Retailers get new models in May and are often looking to clear out old ones, so this can be an especially good time to buy. A lot of people have found that Memorial Day weekend is a particularly good mattress shopping holiday. But don't feel like you have to wait a year if your mattress gives out in June. Mattresses go on sale all of the time, so you never have to wait long for a discount.

Mattress prices are usually marked up significantly by the retailer, so you should be looking for a pretty steep discount from "retail" price. Aim for 50% off at a minimum. 70-80% might be possible on an older model. If a store seems very willing to negotiate, then you can probably drive an even bigger bargain. Plus most mattresses do the job quite nicely, so it's not worth spending $1000s on something the salesperson is trying to push. And salespeople do get commissions, sometimes on specific brands or models, so don't assume you are getting an honest opinion on which one is "best".

You're the one planning to shell out big bucks for a mattress, so you have the upper hand in any negotiation. Use it! First, shop around. Visit several stores, try out several mattresses, and make a note of the ones you like (including manufacturer, make, model, coil count, material, product number and price). Beware of pushy salespeople who follow you around or tell you there's a "one day only" sale (which is rarely true). Tell them you are just looking and you'll let them know if you need help (so you can shop around hassle-free). When you've decided on the mattress for you: negotiate. Like buying a car, there is almost always room for negotiation when buying a mattress. Aim for a huge discount, say 70-80% off, but don't settle for less than 50%. After you have the price you want, then ask for free delivery and setup, and free haul away of your old mattress. Don't ask for that up-front, or the salesperson will use it as an excuse not to lower the price. Bring a partner and try the "good-cop/bad-cop" tactic, where one of you likes the bed but the other says it's way too expensive. If one retailer won't negotiate, try another. There's rarely a sale price that won't be there tomorrow. Saying "no" and leaving the store can be a powerful negotiating tactic. Once you have the price & package you want, be on guard against any extra fees they might try to add on. And check the guarantee, return and warranty policies before buying. If something doesn't feel right, just stop and leave - you can always try again the next day.

The Internet can be a gold mine for discount mattresses, and is a great way to quickly price shop across hundreds of options. While you'll still want to try to get to a store to check for comfort, consider making the final purchase online.
To find a deal, start with the online clearance sections of the big department stores like Macy's and Sears. Also checkout online/direct retailers like Mattress.com, and Overstock.com. Then read mattress ratings & reviews before buying.
There are a few price differences to keep in mind when buying online. On the plus side, this gives you a chance to use an online-only coupon, get cash back, or find a mail-in rebate. Plus you might not have to pay sales tax which can really add up. On the downside, be sure to factor in shipping and handling costs. Some online retailers will jack up these fees to try to squeeze some extra profit out of you. Before buying, check a website's guarantee and warranty information, and never buy from an online store without a phone number and physical address.
