Oftentimes you get a better rate and more flexible terms (such as for refunds and changes) when you book travel directly with the provider. But other times you can benefit from the price protections offered by online travel agents. For example, Expedia offers a Best Price Guarantee, promising a $50 travel coupon on top of a refund if someone books flights, hotels, vacation packages, cruises, rental cars or activities for less than you paid.  Orbitz's Price Assurance offers to automatically send you a check if someone books a flight or prepaid hotel room for less. Travelocity offers similar protection with their PriceGuardian service.

Many car insurance policies cover you in any car you drive, including rentals. And some credit card companies include car rental protection when you pay with their card. Additional insurance purchased at the rental counter can double the cost of your rental, so be sure to find out if you are already covered. Even if you are, though, find out specifics on what is covered in the case of an accident, theft or other damage, to make sure you won't be gambling with huge expenses. It is often cheaper to rent a car in the city or area you are visiting, rather than at the airport. You also save money on the car rental by not having to pay the extra airport tax, which can mean a substantial discount. Consider using other transportation (taxi, public transportation, etc.) to get into the city or ask an in-town agency directly how to get there from the airport.

Some car companies may be willing to pick you up, saving you both extra rental charges and gas for the trip out. Your hotel may offer local shuttle service that can get you from the airport and then out to the rental car agency.

Discounts are often richest in neighborhood (non-airport) locations on weekends since the main rentals usually come from in-week business travelers. You'll multiply your savings in these cases!
