Some cruise lines like Carnival offer what’s called a “guarantee” cabin, rather than “cabin assignment.” You are guaranteed a cabin in a certain category or deck level, but not assigned a specific cabin until closer to sailing. This gives the cruise line flexibility in case a large group wants to book cabins close together. It also translates into a cheaper price for you, as well as the possibility of an upgrade if cabins in your guaranteed price level fill up.
