If gas, maintenance and insurance make it too expensive to use your car, but you are not in a position to sell it or trade down, consider limiting your costs while holding on to your vehicle for the future. Find a safe place to park it (ideally indoors in a free garage) and remove the insurance coverage. This will cut your budget, limit the wear & tear to your vehicle, and of course keep you from needing to purchase another car when you are ready to start driving again.
Just remember to properly store your vehicle to prevent mechanical problems from lack of use. Popular Mechanics published one storage method in an older issue, available online.
