Sponges, rags and cloths are more effective than paper towels when cleaning up spills and they cost less. Instead of throwing away those old clothes, cut them apart to make a box of rags for cleaning the house. Sponges are great for showers and countertops and they can be sterilized in the microwave. Sponges can also be cleaned in the dishwasher. Old newspapers are a good, lint-free alternative when cleaning windows and mirrors.
