If you are in the market for a new hot water heater, or yours is more than 10 years old, consider a new energy efficient model, which will use much less energy than their older counterparts. Look for an ENERGY STAR rated water heater, which can save 15% on energy bills. You might even get a rebate for purchasing a new one, with the cash for appliance clunkers program. Look for a model with heat traps to prevent heat loss through inlet and outlet pipes. Also, don’t buy a water heater bigger than necessary for the size of your house, it will just cost more to run.
