Look for energy efficient water heaters in the following categories: solar, high efficiency gas non-condensing, gas condensing, gas tankless and electric heat pump. For furnaces: consider a high efficiency sealed combustion unit, which may cost more to buy, but will pay for itself in time through lower energy costs. You might even get a rebate for purchasing a new one, with the cash for appliance clunkers program.
