Ask the human resources department at work if there is an option for a flexible spending account (FSA) with your health insurance. These accounts allow you to store tax-free money at the beginning of the year, which can then be applied towards medical situations and prescriptions as the year goes on.
The downside is that any unused money gets forfeited, so think carefully about your expenses to know how much to put away. Include the cost of co-pays, deductibles, and over-the-counter medications, since they are all valid expenses out of your FSA.
If you have extra money at the end of the year, stock up on items like contact lens solution, a new pair of glasses, or other medical items that will last a while, so you don’t give up any of your money.
