Pet healthcare can be very expensive, as any pet owner knows. There are times when an unplanned trip to the vet is unavoidable, but–other times–you may find what you need from one of the many free resources available to you. Here are some of our favorites:
- Merck Veterinary Manual: For comprehensive coverage of every animal health topic imaginable, checkout the free online version of this manual. The MVM has been published for over 50 years and is a widely respected resource for veterinarians, so you can rest assured that you’ll be getting reliable information. If you prefer to have a book on hand, written in “everyday language”, pick up a copy of “The Merck / Medial Manual for Pet Health” which retails for $22.95 but can sometimes be found on sale for $16 or less.
- The College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University: Cornell has a great, comprehensive list of free animal health resources on the web.
- Your Local Pet Store: If you want to talk to an expert, check with the staff your local pet-supply store who are often quite knowledgeable on common pet woes.
- The Veterinarian Colleges Website: This site is hit or miss and can require some extra legwork and–in some cases–even a fee, but you may find some useful information. This site acts as a hub and contains links to 100 or so veterinary programs, some of which contain helpful information or people you may wish to contact in your local area.
