Although most washing machines have settings for various load sizes, a small load still uses the same amount of electricity as a large load. Invest in a multi-compartment hamper and use one compartment each for towels, lights and darks. Only do the laundry when you have a full load, reducing electricity and water costs, not to mention the amount of time you spend doing laundry.
