Most people spend a third of their lives in their beds, so is it imperative to buy something comfortable. Narrow your options down to ones that offer better value. Then, try out several mattresses for at least five minutes each – in comfortable clothes, lie on them how you usually sleep. Lie on several parts of the mattress – it should support uniformly whether you are lying on the sides or in the middle. If you have a partner, test the mattress together – make sure you don’t roll towards each other or feel the other person getting on or off the bed.
Make sure the chosen mattress is well-constructed: look for high-quality stitching and a high coil count. Also look for a cotton or cotton-blend top cover – synthetics tend not to breathe and will be hot in summer.
You don’t have to spend a fortune on a new mattress, but don’t just choose the cheapest one on the market without testing it – this is a purchase that should last 10 years, so it needs to be comfortable.
