Even though appliances are not in use, they still use a small amount of electricity, just by being plugged in. When you consider all the appliances and electric devices plugged in throughout the home, the electricity really adds up. Standby (or “vampire”) power accounts for 5% of electricity usage on average. Consider a power strip to switch off multiple appliances at once. Unplugging a laptop once the battery is charged saves both power and battery life. Turn off wireless modems when not in use, which will also protect your connection from hackers.
