First, choose the smallest air conditioner that will still get the job done – the smaller the unit, the cheaper it is, and the less energy it takes to run. Pick a shady spot to install it – it will be cheaper to run in a shady spot. Before installing a window unit, clean dust and debris from the inside. Then, seal around the unit with a foam weather seal. For all air conditioners, clean the filter regularly – once a month is best – and change the filter as needed. For central units, keep the condenser coil clear of obstructions and debris – plants should be at least two feet away – as obstructions make it harder to expel heat, increasing energy usage. For central air conditioning systems, make sure ducts are insulated and sealed – otherwise you can lose up to 40% of cooling energy through leaks.
