Most restaurants are busiest on the weekends, and also tend to be the most expensive then. Look for specials for certain days of the week. For example, Texas Roadhouse offers a selection of $7.99 dinners Mondays though Thursdays. For big chains you can usually find these specials posted on their website. For other restaurants, just call and ask.
Early-bird specials are common as well, usually for dinner that starts by 5pm or so. Or, go out to breakfast or lunch instead of dinner, where the menus are almost always cheaper.
