Use cruise control on the highway to keep a steady pace – cars use less gas when traveling at a constant speed than when continually speeding up and slowing down. The exception to the rule, however, is in very hilly areas – cruise control is very inefficient when it has to work hard to keep up an exact speed. To drive more efficiently in the city, accelerate and decelerate gently instead of revving the engine to speed up or slamming the brakes to slow down, both of which use up more gas.
