If you have extra miles or points in one airline or hotel program, and need to top-up somewhere else, you could benefit from a points conversion transaction. Calculate the “exchange rate” here and find a path to convert any two programs (using a “six degrees of Kevin Bacon” type approach). Be aware that some (and increasingly many) programs charge transfer fees, require minimums, or have other requirements. Generally speaking buying miles or points to “top up” is very expensive, but if it means the difference between qualifying for a reward or not it could be worthwhile. Read more here. One site to buy extra points is Points.com, but their fees are very high.
