Even with health insurance the co-pay or deductible for a hospital or doctor bill can be a lot of money. If you are on the hook for a big cost, don’t be afraid to ask for a discount. Explain your circumstances – particularly if the bill will cause you financial hardship or you are unable to pay – and many facilities will offer a payment plan or even waive a portion of the charges. If you don’t get anywhere with the billing department try speaking directly with your doctor. Often doctors don’t realize how much is left for you to pay after insurance, and they may be very willing to help.
