If a supermarket doesn’t sell a perishable item by a certain date, then it is required by law to throw it away. This can mean large last minute savings to conscious consumers. If your family goes through milk quickly, then this is a great tip for you. If you don’t go through it quickly, you can still take advantage of the sale and freeze the milk for a later date (honest!).
Look for the brightly colored stickers in your store’s refrigerated section. Many stores have a schedule for when they reduce the price of dairy, meats, produce and bakery items, which means that you can predict when the price will drop. Try going to the store at different times of the day on different days of the week to see when they reduce their prices on perishables.
If a fully priced, perishable item is due to expire soon you can ask the manager if they will reduce the price for you. Always be aware of expiration dates since items may expire the day they are purchased. As always, make sure to watch that the cashier notes the price adjustment.
