Typically insurers will offer discounts – as high as 15-20% – for an installed home security system, so if you have one already be sure to let them know to cash in on the savings. Tell them when it was installed, to potentially qualify for a retroactive discount, so they would owe you money. If you don’t have one yet, ask your insurer how much you would save and consider that against your cost of installing and maintaining a system, which can make it more affordable. Also ask whether they offer discounts – 5-10% is common – for things like smoke detectors and deadbolt locks which you might already have.
