Banks make a lot of money on fees, especially off of international travelers. Before you go, find out if your bank has any no-fee agreements with other banks when using their ATMs. Also, know that credit cards charge higher fees for withdrawing money from an ATM. For credit cards, Visa charges a standard 1% exchange rate fee for international purchases, whereas American Express charges 3%. Some individual credit cards charge fees on top of those standard fees. Do research before you go to find out how to best use your cards and cash to avoid most fees.
