Be sure to thoroughly review bills each month. If paying online, still view the bill online before submitting payment. Looking at a bill line-by-line is the easiest way to check for over-charges or questionable fees. Look for long distance phone calls you didn’t actually make, unannounced utility rate hikes or sudden jumps in bills. If anything seems out of place, call the company to ask about it. Companies often make mistakes in their favor, whether intentionally or not. And it’s up to you to make sure you don’t get burned by not paying attention.
