Use a vacuum or broom to get rid of dust build-up around the condenser coils every one to three months. Dusty coils make a refrigerator work harder, which leads to higher electric bills, so clean them regularly. The coils are either behind or under the refrigerator, depending on the model. Also regularly check and clean the gaskets on the refrigerator and freezer. Check them for damage or cracks, and clean with an all-purpose cleaner. The gaskets seal the doors so cold air can’t escape. A good test is to shut a piece of paper in the door and see how easy it is to pull out. If there is no resistance, it is time to replace the gaskets. These two simple maintenance tasks can help extend the life of a refrigerator and cut down on electric bills.
