Hot water remains in supply pipes after a tap is turned off. Eventually this water cools, and the heating energy is wasted. If you have a hot water heater close to the hot water taps, less piping is required, which means less heat wasted. If this is impractical in your home, insulate the hot water heater and pipes to keep heat in.
