When warm air escapes and cold air comes in, heaters need to work harder to maintain a comfortable temperature in the house. Before winter starts, inspect your house for air leaks. For windows, replace any moldy or rotten areas. For doorways, place your hand near the bottom of the door jamb to feel for cold air coming in and use a fabric draft stopper for any doors with drafts. Better yet, buy some weather-stripping from the hardware store to seal up that air leak.
