For other types of electronics, buying used will save you money, but it may or may not be the way you want to go. For video games, though: we swear by it. If you buy a "pre-owned" game from a larger retailer such as GameStop or Amazon, it will be guaranteed to work just like new and it can save you from around $10 per game to as much as 50% off the new price. Even for hot new releases this can work, provided you wait about a week after it first comes out. You can also buy used games from places like eBay and craigslist. Although the reliability isn't guaranteed, you can usually still find quality games at cheap prices.

swap games online
There are a few very big video game swap sites out there, nowadays. They are threatening to put GameStop out of business... Do a bit of googling and you'll be able to swap for AtariII games if that's your desire...
