Much baby furniture is overpriced because it is considered specialty furniture. However, you can find regular furniture of a higher quality and better value, just by shopping around. Consider consignment shops and garage sales, furniture sales, and nude-furniture stores (which will often simply require a coat of paint). For dressers, just make sure drawers can't be pulled all the way out and look for sharp corners.

IKEA has some great versatile furniture that can be appropriated for babies.
