Take control of your own medical care and ask whether a test ordered by a specialist is really "necessary." You don't have to put your health at risk, but you may learn that the benefits of a very expensive test are not what you thought, and might not be worth the cost to you. Talk to your doctors. Also be sure to take copies of any tests (e.g., x-rays, MRIs) to any other doctors you might decide to see so you don't have to incur any additional costs or unnecessary repeats.
