If you are going to have to pay a lot out-of-pocket for coinsurance (or no insurance coverage) on a pricey medical test, it's worth shopping around since the costs can be very different from one lab or clinic to another. Ask your doctor for the CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) code for your procedure, or check the website of the American Medical Association to search for the code. Then ask each facility their charge for that CPT code. You could save $500-1,000 or more depending on the procedure and your insurance coverage. Some health insurance companies (Aetna, for one) provide search engines for participating facilities and their costs of service to make it easy to compare.
