If you don’t want to buy Microsoft Office multiple times for multiple computers, try Openoffice.org, which has compatible versions of Word, Excel and Power Point - without having to spend thousands for the brand name. Likewise, several antivirus software downloads like Avast or AVG can be found for free via Download.com (just make sure to choose a reputable one, first, based on the expert and user ratings). If you have to buy, see if the software company will let you give it a “test drive” for 30 days or so to make sure it will work for you. Adobe offers free trials on all of their products including CS4, Photoshop, and Acrobat.

Open Office is really good
You can do basically all the same stuff as Microsoft branded software, and it's compatible with MS too.
