Grocery stores like to spray the produce with water to keep the fruits and vegetables looking fresh. If you are buying by the pound, try to shake off any excess water as this will just add to the total weight of the product.

Stem weight
I also like to compare the price of different cuts of the same vegetable. For example, broccoli crowns vs. whole broccoli bunches. If the crowns cost only a little bit more per pound, then it might be worth the price since you normally discard the large, heavy stem from a bunch of broccoli.
