The perforation on paper goods is merely a suggestion. A small mess might not require an entire paper towel, so try ripping the amount you need off the roll rather than following the manufacturer's suggestion. Some companies now offer towels with short sheets just for this purpose. However, these rolls often come with a premium price. Using smaller bits of towel will give you much more mileage out of your paper goods.

Paper quality
It's also important to note that paper quality does go a long way with paper towels and bathroom tissue. If you need to use 2 sheets of one brand to do the same job as 1 sheet of another brand, then you are paying twice as much. A little more out of pocket could save money in the long run.
