There are many places to look for gardening bargains outside of traditional nurseries. Garden clubs, botanical centers, arboretums and plant societies often hold plant and flower sales. Cities often give away free trees, compost and mulch to a neighborhood group that is willing to plant and maintain them. Join the National Arbor Day Foundation for $10 and receive 10 trees shipped to you for free. Or, pay only for shipping and handling, but get plants for free at, a site that trains and employs workers with disabilities.
