With online bill pay, it is easier to keep track of payments, but still a good idea to print out a quarterly statement and save it in a bill file. For those paying by check, write the check number and date mailed on each bill stub, and keep it on file. If you pay your bills by cash or money order, always get a receipt from the company. A ledger is a great way to keep track of bills and expenses. Use a separate page for water, electricity, food and other expenses - seeing month by month expenditure is a great way to monitor usage and spending. Likewise, keep track of maintenance and repairs on household appliances and utilities - a sudden spike in rates may indicate an appliance is working overtime and needs to be replaced.
